  1. How is HorseSense different from a good horse feed?

HThe essential composition of HorseSense is: the complete spectrum of Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids specifically balanced for the specific hay and forage being fed to your horse-- because, if your horse is being fed legume hays and forages, his basic intake is very different from a horse consuming a basic grass, such as Timothy. As increased activity levels require more nutrients, this must also be addressed. Interestingly, because of the different keeping abilities of horses, even with increased activity, many horses do not require increased caloric intake. However, they do require more Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids to rebuild and replace bone, soft tissue, synovial fluid, blood and all body components. Because HorseSense separates the basic nutritional requirements (i.e. Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids) from calories, it is very simple to make a custom feed for every horse in your barn, every day, without supplements.

  3. Is there a special HorseSense for a Senior horse?

HorseSense is the ideal nutritional product for all horses. Traditional Senior Feeds are in a pelletted form. This pelletting process requires that ingredients are ground before being bound into the pelletted form, resulting in these products traveling through the small intestine at such a fast rate that utilization is decreased rather than increased. Protein is mostly digested in the small intestine, so protein sources are passed through to the large intestine where they cannot be utilized, which is just one reason so many senior horses suffer muscle-wasting. HorseSense ingredients are not ground, but rather, rolled, resulting in the preservation of functional fiber which pelletted feeds do not

  4. My horse is on medication. Will HorseSense interfere with Meds?

No. The full spectrum of nutrition that HorseSense provides may, in fact, improve utilization of medications—and because we do not use herbal products, we can guarantee there will be no interactions as a result. In the past fifteen years, we have seen healing accomplished in half the time suggested by veterinarians. Many horses, having been diagnosed with diseases such as EPSM and Cushing’s cease to exhibit symptoms.

  5. How do I KNOW that HorseSense has optimal levels of everything my horse needs?

Voluminous research exists which defines Nutrient Requirements. The HorseSense Ration Balancing Nutritional System has been achieved by combining all the best research on large animal and equine nutrition from universities and the private sector. By specifically addressing different hay and forage intakes, weight, performance levels, gestation and lactation, we have been able to formulate a delivery system that delivers to each individual horse their very specific nutritional needs. Interesting research continues to be done in the field of equine nutrition—most of it not very definitive. However, Virginia Equine Research employs all legitimate research information as it becomes available. After that, the answer lies with the animal itself. When the late Frank Morrison, PhD*. was queried for more precise knowing of the correctness of his rations, in this particular case, for poultry, he told his PhD. Candidates, “Ultimately, gentlemen, you have to ask the chicken!” At HorseSense, we have asked the horse, and the horse and owner agree that HorseSense is amazing!

  6. Why is HorseSense fed at much lower levels than horse feed?

First, our patented flame-roasting process dramatically increases the rate at which basic feed products are digested by the horse as a result of the complete gelatinization of starches, making it available for digestion in the small intestine, resulting in a more complete utilization throughout the digestive tract. Standard horse feeds depend mostly upon digestion in the large intestine, bypassing the more complete digestive process that results when grains are flame-roasted. This flame-roasting process eliminates many pathogens such as Aflatoxin, E. Coli, Salmonella, Botulism, etc., which are organisms that continuously degrade the horse’s immune system, resulting in decreased digestion and utilization of nutrients. Because HorseSense contains the optimal balance of all nutrients, digestion and utilization of all nutritive factors are increased.

Frank B. Morrison, PhD., was one of the most eminent and widely respected agricultural scientists in the world. Considered “The Father of Animal Nutrition,” Dr. Morrison’s works are still some of the most definitive in existence. He had an international reputation as an administrator, teacher, and author in the field of livestock feeding and animal nutrition. Dr. Morrison’s tables in Feeds and Feeding are republished in every major work on large animal and equine nutrition.
